The Best Beaches on Lanzarote

All of the islands making up the Canary Islands, including Lanzarote, rose out of the sea following volcanic activity. However, most of the beaches on Lanzarote do not consist of black sand. You can choose a beach with a long reach of golden sand bordering a calm sea, pick one with perfect rolling waves for surfing, discover a hidden cove below a cliff, or find a bay formed in what was once a volcanic crater. The following is a list just to give you a taste of Lanzarote’s varied and attractive beaches.

Playa Banca

It’s hard to believe that a fishing village once adjoined what is now a premier family-friendly beach. Your family will enjoy the clean white sands and sheltered bays just made for swimming and snorkelling. Lifeguards are on hand to make sure your kids stay safe in the water. The promenade has a variety of places to dine and drink. Take your kids to Gelatería Italiana Verderosa and sample the homemade gelatos at one of the most popular ice-cream venues in the Canary Islands. A less crowded beach, Playa Dorada is only a short walk away. Famara Get away from the resorts and visit Famara on the northwest coast. You will find a dramatic setting – a long, curving bay overlooked by spectacular pinkish-colored cliffs. Some scenes in the movie Broken Embraces were shot here. Apart from its beauty, Famara has excellent conditions for surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, hang gliding, and horse riding. In October one leg of the world surfing championships is held on the beautiful San Juan beach close to the village of La Caleta de Famara. The village is also your destination for dining on specialty dishes and drinking a wine made in Lanzarote. Papagayo Often regarded as the e most beautiful beach on Lanzarote with a crescent of fine, white sand below sheltering cliffs and a view of Fuerteventura across the sea. Situated in the Los Ajaches nature reserve in the south of the island, it tends to be crowded in the high season. However, you can escape the crowds by strolling to the adjacent bays of Las Mujeres, Pozo, Congrío or Muelas (be aware that you might come across nudists). The beaches are perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Relax at an outdoor table at Casa Angelina and enjoy a paella or maybe locally caught prawns, clams, or octopus. Las Conchas An escape from the resort areas - an idyllic strip of golden sand on the island of La Graciosa situated off the northern edge of Lanzarote. The island is accessible via a twenty-minute boat ride from Órzola to the harbour at Caleta del Sebo. From there choose a jeep ride to Las Conchas, 4.5 miles away, or hire a bike. Although the crystal clear water looks very inviting and scuba diving is available, you should take care when swimming here as the sea can be quite rough. Walk or cycle around the island and then relax by lazing around on the beach. If you get hungry, several restaurants can be found in Caleta del Sebo. La Garita Next to the northern village of Arrieta is La Garita beach with its golden sand sloping gradually towards the sea. It’s a favorite beach with local families and features a children’s play area and a fitness trail. You can often find good surfing waves at the southern end of this beach, while other areas border calmer water. The friendly staff at the Chiringuito beach bar will keep you supplied with drinks and generous tapas. For a fresh-fish lunch, walk a little further down the beach to Playa de la Garita. Caletón Blanco Something a bit different near Órzola on the northeast coast of the island. Caletón Blanco is a bracelet of tiny white sand coves and warm rock pools. It’s very popular with the local people and visitors who like to camp. If you love snorkelling, you will enjoy the aquatic life in the clear sapphire water of whichever cove takes your fancy. Your kids will have fun exploring the underwater life in the rock pools. For a bite to eat, bring a picnic or head for one of the fish eateries around the harbour in Órzola, such as Perla del Átlantico.

Playa Quemada

Playa Quemada means “burnt beach,” and is so named because of the beach’s gravelly dark sand and rocks. You can find it on the south-east coast near Puerto Calero. Here you can get away from the crowded resort areas and mix with the locals. The sheltered beach is a pleasant spot for sunbathing, safe swimming, or reading that book you never had time to read back home. Restaurante Sal Marina is right on the beach. Take a table on the terrace and enjoy a relaxed lunch. Sp
end Your Holiday on Lanzarote

When you arrive, spend a day driving around the island. The mesmerising effect of the volcanic landscape will soothe your frazzled brain. To see a stunning example of the island’s volcanic beachscape, visit Playa del Charco de los Clicos and take in the contrast of pitch-black sand, red cliffs and a bright green algae-colored lagoon. The rest of the island’s beautiful and varied beaches will not disappoint you.
